Polishing, by hand or machine on car paintwork, is simply the mechanical (or physical) removal of defects through surface abrasion.
For the most part, the process involves abrading the top layer to remove a microscopic amount. This in turn smooths out the defects creating a flatter surface.
This also causes light to bounce off in a more uniform direction, levelling the optical finish, and making the surface appear deeper and shiner.
It's a bit like exfoliating your car!
Keeping a vehicle’s paintwork in perfect condition can be a time-consuming and tricky job
All too often it can fall victim to swirls from poor washing techniques, scratches from hedges, etching from bird droppings and even marks caused by rain.
Removing these blemishes by hand can be incredibly labour intensive and some of these defects cannot be removed without the mechanical intervention of machine polishing.
The paintwork on your car is made up of different layers. First, the bare metal body panel is coated with a primer, typically a grey-white colour, to ensure the paint adheres more efficiently to the surface and increases the its durability.
The base coat is then layered over the top, the total thickness of which varies with the manufacturer. To protect the colour pigment, a protective clear coat is applied on top.
The clear coat also contains UV protective elements designed to inhibit fading caused by the sun’s UV rays. The UV elements are lighter than the other sealing elements and tend to settle towards the upper layers as the clear coat cures.
Polishing Isn’t the Same as Waxing
Many car owners fall into the trap of using the terms “wax” and “polish”, interchangeably, but they have very different functions.
Car polishes are mildly abrasive, meaning they can flatten the clear coat. This removes any light imperfections, usually inflicted during the washing process by using sponges, brushes or other aggressive techniques of cleaning the paintwork. The overall aim, is to improve the gloss level.
Waxes are not abrasive and leave a protective layer on the paintwork to help shield it from UV rays, dirt, road grime etc. They cannot flatten the clear coat since they do not contain abrasives. Polishes do not protect the paintwork, so it is important to wax after polishing to protect the finish.
The confusion between waxes and polishes probably arises from the underlying claims that they both make the paint look shinier.
Waxes tend to contain chemicals that will add some level of gloss to the paintwork. However, they do not have nearly as much of an impact as polishing. A truly glossy finish comes from the flatness of the clear coat, not what you put on top.
Machine polishing requires more experience and skill, which is where we come in! It is possible to machine polish a car by yourself, however, most car owners do not have the expertise or confidence to take a machine polisher to their car’s paintwork.

"I would just like to say thank you to Dave at JERSEY DENT REMOVAL, my daughter opened the passenger door on a pillar which put two little dents and they were driving me crazy I took the car to a couple of garages and I was quoted £500 plus as the dents were v-shaped and hard to get out with out rubbing the car down and using filler and respraying the door and rear panel in order to match the paint BUT JERSEY DENT REMOVAL has removed the dents without any filler or spraying for £120 a fantastic job absolutely amazing job."
